Soluble vs insoluble fibre: it's not just 'eat more fibre', it's which kind
Fibre advice usually stops at a single gram target. But soluble and insoluble fibre do genuinely different jobs in the body — one lowers cholesterol and flattens glucose, the other moves things through — and most diets are lopsided toward one at the other's expense.

Soluble and insoluble fibre behave completely differently once they hit your gut, and a diet can hit a fibre gram target while being heavily skewed toward one type — missing much of what the other delivers.
What soluble fibre actually does
Soluble fibre dissolves in water to form a gel, found in oats, beans, lentils, apples, citrus and psyllium. Brown and colleagues' meta-analysis (1999, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition) found soluble fibre, particularly from oats and psyllium, reliably lowers LDL cholesterol by binding bile acids in the gut and forcing the liver to pull more cholesterol from the blood to replace them. It also slows gastric emptying and blunts post-meal glucose — directly relevant to the ApoB and glycaemic markers covered elsewhere in this guide.
Soluble fibre lowers cholesterol by forcing your liver to pull more of it out of your blood. Insoluble fibre does its job by not dissolving at all.
What insoluble fibre actually does
Insoluble fibre — wheat bran, whole grains, the skins of vegetables, nuts — does not dissolve; it adds bulk and speeds transit through the digestive tract. Its main benefit is bowel regularity and, through feeding a different portion of the gut microbiome, some contribution to overall microbial diversity. The two fibre types are frequently found together in whole plant foods, but a diet heavy in bran cereal and light on oats, beans and fruit will be insoluble-skewed, and vice versa.
Why the ratio matters more than the total
If your primary concern is LDL/ApoB or post-meal glucose, soluble fibre sources (oats, beans, lentils, psyllium, apples) are doing more of the specific work you need. If your concern is regularity or general gut diversity, insoluble sources matter more. Most people benefit from both, and the practical failure mode is loading up on one convenient source — bran cereal, say — and assuming the fibre box is ticked, while soluble fibre stays low all week.
