Meditation for your bloodwork: how 10 minutes moves hs-CRP and cortisol

Meditation is usually sold on how it makes you feel. There is a separate, less-discussed body of evidence on what an 8-week mindfulness programme does to measurable inflammation and stress-hormone markers — the kind of numbers that show up on a blood panel.

Most meditation advocacy focuses on the subjective side — less rumination, better focus, a calmer relationship with your own thoughts. All plausible and reasonably well-supported in their own right, but there is a second, more measurable body of evidence that gets discussed far less: what structured mindfulness practice does to inflammatory and stress-hormone markers you can actually see on a blood test.

What an 8-week programme actually moves

Pascoe and colleagues’ 2017 meta-analysis pooled results across multiple mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) trials — the standard 8-week structured programme most academic meditation research uses — and found consistent reductions in both hs-CRP (a marker of systemic inflammation also used in cardiovascular risk scoring) and morning cortisol, with effect sizes in some analyses in the same range as first-line pharmacological approaches to perceived stress. That is a meaningfully stronger claim than "it helps you feel calmer" — it is measurable, physiological, and shows up independent of self-report.

The mechanism most people cite for meditation is subjective calm. The one worth citing to a sceptic is a measurable drop in hs-CRP after eight weeks of consistent practice.

Why 10 minutes, and why daily beats occasional

The habit library’s 10-minute daily target is calibrated to be sustainable rather than maximal — the underlying research generally uses structured weekly sessions plus daily home practice, and the biomarker changes tend to track cumulative practice time and consistency more than any single session’s length. A short daily habit that actually happens beats a longer, occasional one that gets skipped when life gets busy — which is precisely when the stress-response benefit would matter most.
