Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) have moved well beyond their original clinical purpose in diabetes management into mainstream wellness — worn by healthy people chasing "flat" glucose curves as a marker of metabolic optimisation. A randomized crossover trial specifically tested whether CGMs are even measuring something real and diet-responsive in healthy, non-diabetic people, which is a more basic question than it might seem.
What the trial confirmed
The trial found that diet-induced differences in estimated plasma glucose concentrations in healthy, non-diabetic adults were genuinely detectable by CGM — confirming the device does pick up real, meal-driven glucose variation in people without diabetes, not just noise. That is a meaningful validation: the tool is measuring something real in this population.
What it does not confirm
Detecting a real difference in glucose response between two diets is a different claim from that difference being clinically meaningful for a healthy person’s long-term health. Unlike in diabetes, where CGM data is tied to well-established outcomes (HbA1c, complication risk), there is no equally well-established outcome linking small glucose-curve variations in healthy people to hard endpoints like cardiovascular disease or mortality — that evidence base is still thin.
