Magnesium: the mineral half the population is quietly under-eating

How widespread the shortfall is
US intake surveys have repeatedly found roughly half of adults consuming less magnesium than the estimated average requirement, and DiNicolantonio and colleagues (2018, Open Heart) argued that subclinical magnesium deficiency is a widespread, under-recognised driver of cardiovascular risk. The RDA sits around 400 to 420 mg/day for men and 310 to 320 mg for women — figures a diet heavy in refined grains and light on greens, nuts and legumes routinely misses.
Magnesium deficiency rarely shows up on a standard blood test — most magnesium is inside cells, not in serum — which is why intake tracking matters.
Why serum tests can miss it
A standard serum magnesium test is a poor detector of body stores, because the body tightly defends blood levels by pulling magnesium from bone and tissue — so serum can read normal while total stores are low. This is precisely why tracking dietary intake is more informative than a one-off blood draw for magnesium, and why the food lever matters.
The link to recovery and HRV
Magnesium's role in nervous-system regulation and sleep quality makes it relevant to heart-rate variability — a key recovery marker.
