Vitamin D and the fat-soluble vitamins: the ones a test actually settles
Vitamin D is the supplement most people take and the nutrient most worth measuring, because the 'right' dose depends entirely on your blood level and where you live. Here is how to think about it and its fat-soluble companions A, E and K.

Unlike most nutrients, the correct intake is not a fixed number — it depends on your sun exposure, skin, latitude and current blood level, which is exactly why it rewards being measured rather than guessed.
Why vitamin D is worth measuring
Vitamin D supports calcium absorption, bone health, immune function and muscle performance. Holick (2007, NEJM) documented how common insufficiency is, especially where sunlight is limited for months at a time. Sufficiency is generally defined as a serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D above 30 ng/mL (75 nmol/L); the RDA of 600 to 800 IU is a population floor, and people who are deficient often need considerably more to reach sufficiency — a dose best guided by a test rather than a guess.
Vitamin D is the rare nutrient where the 'right' dose is whatever gets your blood level into range — which means testing beats guessing.
The fat-soluble family — and why storage cuts both ways
Vitamins A, D, E and K are fat-soluble, meaning they are absorbed with dietary fat and stored in body tissue rather than excreted like water-soluble vitamins. That storage is why deficiency develops slowly — and why excess matters: unlike vitamin C, fat-soluble vitamins can accumulate to toxic levels with reckless high-dose supplementation, particularly vitamins A and D. More is emphatically not always better here.
The food and supplement levers
Vitamin D comes from oily fish, egg yolks and fortified foods, plus skin synthesis from strong sunlight; A from liver, dairy and orange vegetables (as provitamin carotenoids); E from nuts, seeds and vegetable oils; K from leafy greens and, as K2, from fermented foods and animal products. Because they are absorbed with fat, taking or eating them alongside a fat-containing meal improves uptake.
