One workout style helped older adults lose fat without losing muscle
Weight loss in older adults usually comes at a cost: some of it is muscle. A 6-month trial of more than 120 adults in their 70s found one exercise approach broke that pattern — and it wasn’t traditional steady-state cardio.

Weight loss in older adults comes with a well-documented downside: a meaningful share of what is lost tends to be lean mass, not just fat — a problem given that muscle mass is itself a strong predictor of independence and mortality risk later in life. A six-month trial of more than 120 adults in their 70s set out to test whether exercise type changes that ratio, and found a clear winner.
The comparison
The trial compared high-intensity interval training (HIIT) against other exercise approaches over six months in this older cohort. The HIIT group lost fat mass while preserving lean mass significantly better than the comparison groups — breaking the usual pattern where weight loss in this age group comes partly at the expense of muscle.
Why intervals may work differently in older adults
HIIT’s higher-intensity intervals appear to provide a stronger anabolic and metabolic stimulus per minute of exercise than steady, moderate-intensity work — plausible mechanisms include a greater growth-hormone and catecholamine response, and a stronger stimulus to type II (fast-twitch) muscle fibres, which are disproportionately lost with age (sarcopenia preferentially affects type II fibres). Steady-state cardio alone does relatively little to counter this specific pattern of age-related muscle loss.
For six months, one style of exercise let a group of adults in their 70s lose fat without the usual accompanying loss of muscle. That distinction matters more with age, not less.
What this means for programming in later life
This does not mean older adults should abandon steady-state cardio, which still carries strong evidence for cardiovascular and Zone 2-specific benefits — it means intensity, appropriately scaled and supervised, deserves a place in the programme rather than being reflexively avoided as "too much" for older trainees. Resistance training alongside interval work remains the more complete strategy; the trial’s finding is about which cardio modality best protects muscle, not a replacement for lifting.
