Sleep: the two numbers that matter more than any wearable score
Everyone knows sleep matters. Fewer people know that a landmark 2023 study of 88,000 adults found the TIME you sleep predicts mortality more strongly than HOW LONG you sleep. Here are the two sleep habits Misi tracks, and why both are non-negotiable.

Seven, eight, sometimes a defensive "I function fine on six." That instinct is not wrong — duration matters enormously — but it is incomplete, and the research on the second, less-discussed dimension of sleep is striking enough that Misi treats it as its own habit rather than folding it into "just sleep more."
Habit one: at least 7 hours
The foundational number comes from decades of sleep research, popularised by Matthew Walker's 2017 synthesis Why We Sleep: consistently sleeping under 7 hours is associated with higher all-cause mortality, blunted insulin sensitivity, lower heart-rate variability and impaired memory consolidation. The target Misi tracks is simple — 7 or more hours, most nights — because the dose-response relationship in the literature is clear at that threshold, with 7 to 9 hours the range associated with the best outcomes across large cohorts.
Habit two: the same bed and wake time, give or take 30 minutes
The more surprising finding is what happens when you compare duration against regularity head-to-head. Windred and colleagues (2023, SLEEP) followed roughly 88,000 adults and found that sleep regularity — going to bed and waking at consistent times — was a STRONGER predictor of mortality than total sleep time. Two people averaging the same 7.5 hours a night can have meaningfully different risk profiles if one has a rock-solid schedule and the other’s bedtime swings by two hours depending on the day.
A consistent schedule is not just a nice-to-have around sleep duration — in the largest studies we have, it is the stronger of the two predictors.
Why regularity has its own biological logic
This isn't just a statistical curiosity. Your circadian clock — the master timer that governs cortisol release, core body temperature, melatonin onset and dozens of other rhythms — takes its cues from consistency. A wandering sleep schedule is functionally similar to mild, recurring jet lag: the clock never fully re-anchors, which is reflected in the lower HRV and higher morning cortisol seen in people with irregular schedules, even when their average sleep duration looks fine on paper.
How Misi tracks both, separately
Because the two habits capture different risk, Misi’s habit library logs them as separate items rather than one blended "sleep" score: "Sleep ≥ 7 hours" as a nightly duration target, and "Same bed/wake time (±30m)" as its own boolean habit. Both roll into the Restore contributor score, and duration specifically feeds the daily readiness engine — a short night lowers today's readiness band and the training recommendation that comes with it, while a chronic pattern of short or irregular sleep shows up clearly across your weekly and monthly trends.
The practical takeaway
If you can only fix one thing this month, anchoring a consistent wake time — even on weekends — is arguably the higher-leverage move, because it stabilises everything downstream: when you get hungry, when you get tired, how much caffeine you think you need, and how hard the next habit (a genuine wind-down routine) actually has to work to get you to sleep on time.
