Losing just 80 minutes of sleep a night was enough to cause weight gain
Most sleep-and-weight research uses extreme, four-hour sleep deprivation. A new Columbia trial tested a mild, realistic sleep cut instead — 80 minutes less a night for six weeks — and still found measurable weight gain and more sedentary time.

Most of the research linking poor sleep to weight gain relies on extreme sleep deprivation — often limiting people to four hours a night, a level almost nobody sustains for more than a few days. A 2026 Columbia University trial asked a more realistic question: what happens with a mild, chronic sleep cut closer to what roughly 30% of adults actually experience?
How the trial was designed
95 adults who normally slept 7–8 hours a night completed two six-week phases in randomized order: one where they delayed their usual bedtime by 90 minutes, and one where they kept their normal schedule. Throughout, wrist monitors tracked sleep and physical activity, while researchers measured body weight, waist circumference, body composition and appetite-related hormones.
The result: measurable weight gain from a mild, realistic cut
During the sleep-restriction phase, participants averaged about 80 fewer minutes of sleep a night and gained roughly one pound over six weeks. Extrapolated across a year, the researchers say a similarly modest, chronic sleep shortfall could plausibly add up to clinically meaningful weight gain — not because of one dramatic night, but because of the cumulative, unnoticed erosion most people experience.

The activity finding is arguably the more interesting mechanism
Rather than only driving overeating, shorter sleep also increased sedentary time by an average of 17 minutes a day — nearly 30 minutes among men and postmenopausal women — even after accounting for the extra waking hours. In other words, less sleep didn’t just risk more snacking; it measurably reduced how much people moved, which independently raises long-term chronic disease risk.
Why this adds to a bigger picture
The same research group has separately found that similar mild sleep restriction increased insulin resistance (especially in postmenopausal women) and triggered an influx of inflammatory cells in the heart in people at elevated cardiovascular risk — evidence that modest, chronic sleep loss is not a benign, easily-shrugged-off habit but a measurable contributor to the mechanisms behind obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
