"Yo-yo dieting ruins your metabolism" isn’t backed by the evidence, major review finds
A widely-repeated fear keeps people from trying to lose weight again after regaining it. A major review of decades of human and animal research found no convincing proof that weight cycling itself causes lasting metabolic harm.

"Yo-yo dieting will wreck your metabolism" is one of the most repeated pieces of nutrition folklore, and it discourages a lot of people from trying again after regaining weight they once lost. A 2026 review in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, combining decades of human and animal research, found the fear isn’t supported by strong evidence.
What the review actually examined
Professor Faidon Magkos (University of Copenhagen) and Professor Norbert Stefan (German Center for Diabetes Research, University Hospital Tübingen and Helmholtz Munich) reviewed observational studies, randomized clinical trials, and animal research on repeated weight loss and regain — assessing effects on body weight, body composition, metabolism, and blood sugar control.
What they found — and didn’t find
The review found no consistent evidence that weight cycling causes excessive lean-mass (muscle) loss or a lasting metabolic slowdown. In most cases, people who regained weight returned to a body composition similar to where they started, rather than ending up in worse shape. There was also no strong evidence that weight cycling itself drives the gradual, long-term weight gain often seen in obesity — once pre-existing conditions, aging, and total lifetime exposure to obesity were properly accounted for, the supposed harms largely disappeared.

The distinction that actually matters
The authors draw a careful line: regaining weight does undo many of the health improvements gained from losing it — better blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol can all drift back toward baseline. But losing those benefits is not the same as ending up worse off than before you started. Several large studies found that once average body weight over time is accounted for, weight cycling itself is no longer linked to higher diabetes or cardiovascular disease risk — excess body fat, not the cycling pattern, is the main driver of that risk.
Why this matters more than ever with GLP-1 medications
The findings arrive as GLP-1 and dual incretin drugs become widespread, since many patients regain some weight after stopping treatment — a pattern that resembles weight cycling. The authors’ message is that this regain shouldn’t automatically be treated as harmful: even temporary weight loss can deliver real, lasting health and quality-of-life benefits, whether or not it’s ultimately sustained.
