Muscle does something most people never think about: it functions as a savings account for the whole body. In a 2006 review in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition titled “The underappreciated role of muscle in health and disease,” metabolism researcher Robert Wolfe argued that skeletal muscle’s value goes far beyond movement or even blood sugar — it is central to how the body survives illness, injury and aging. His core point is that we have systematically undervalued muscle when we think about diet and long-term health.
Muscle as the body’s amino-acid reservoir
Wolfe describes muscle as playing a central role in whole-body protein metabolism by serving as the principal reservoir for amino acids. Your vital organs — heart, liver, immune system, gut lining — need a continuous supply of amino acids to keep making the proteins they depend on. When you are not absorbing amino acids from food (during illness, fasting, or the stress of surgery), the body draws on muscle to maintain protein synthesis in those tissues. Muscle also provides hepatic gluconeogenic precursors: the raw material the liver uses to make glucose when none is coming from the gut.
In practical terms, muscle is the buffer that keeps essential functions running when intake stops. That is a role you never notice when you are healthy — and one that becomes decisive the moment you are not.

Why the size of the reserve matters
If muscle is the account the body draws on under stress, then the balance you carry into a crisis matters. Wolfe argues that altered muscle metabolism plays a key role in the genesis — and therefore the prevention — of many common pathologic conditions and chronic diseases. Someone entering a serious illness, a major operation or a period of forced bed rest with more muscle has more reserve to spend before the losses start compromising vital functions, wound healing and recovery. Building muscle while you are well is, in effect, building resilience for when you are not.
Why this rarely shows up in dietary advice
The provocative part of Wolfe’s review is his observation that, despite all this, the maintenance of adequate muscle mass, strength and metabolic function has rarely, if ever, been targeted as a relevant endpoint of dietary recommendations. Nutrition guidance has historically been built around avoiding deficiency and managing weight, not around preserving the tissue that determines how you weather disease and aging. He calls for factors directly related to muscle mass, strength and metabolic function to be built into how we define a healthy diet and lifestyle across the lifespan.
Building the reserve
The reserve is built the ordinary way — progressive resistance training paired with adequate, well-distributed protein, sustained over years. It is one of the clearest cases where an investment in fitness today is really an investment in how well you will handle a health setback, and how independently you will age, decades from now.
