Cold plunging right after lifting may be quietly blunting your strength gains

Cold-water immersion has become a default post-workout ritual. A randomised crossover trial found that using it regularly right after strength training produced smaller gains in muscle thickness and a trend toward reduced strength — timing, it turns out, matters.

Cold plunges are everywhere in fitness culture right now, often used immediately after a hard training session on the assumption that reducing inflammation and soreness is straightforwardly good. A randomised crossover trial specifically designed to isolate the effect of regular post-strength-training cold-water immersion on actual training adaptations complicates that assumption.

How the trial isolated the effect

Eleven participants completed two separate 8-week leg-training blocks (3 sessions per week), separated by an 8-week washout period, with each block followed by either 10 minutes of whole-body cold-water immersion or passive sitting after every session — a within-person crossover design that controls for individual differences by having each person serve as their own comparison.

What the trial found

There was no significant difference in leg-press one-rep-max or jump performance between conditions overall, but comparing pre-training to a 3-week follow-up after training ended, the cooling condition showed a moderate negative trend for both 1RM and jump performance. Muscle thickness (vastus medialis) showed the clearest effect: a statistically significant, large negative impact of regular cooling on the muscle growth that would otherwise be expected from the training block.

The present investigation suggests small negative effects of regular cooling on strength training adaptations.

The proposed mechanism

This lines up with other research showing post-exercise cooling can blunt muscle protein synthesis rates in the hours after resistance training — the same inflammatory and cellular signalling processes that cold immersion is designed to dampen appear to be part of the normal adaptive response that drives muscle growth, not purely unwanted collateral damage.

The honest caveats and the practical fix

This was a small trial (11 participants) and the primary strength/jump-performance effects were not statistically significant on their own — the muscle-thickness result is the strongest signal. The fix implied by this and related research is not "never cold plunge," but simply separating the two: use cold-water immersion when recovery speed matters more than maximising hypertrophy (e.g., a tournament, back-to-back competition days), and skip it, or move it hours away from training, during a dedicated muscle-building block.
